- 2 cups fresh cherries, pitted

Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a cake pan.
- Cream together the 1/2 cup butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the fresh cherries.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool completely.
- Beat the softened butter for frosting until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk, beating until smooth.
- Frost the cooled cake with buttercream frosting and top with additional cherries if desired.

For best results, pit cherries carefully and toss them in a bit of flour before folding into the batter to keep them suspended.
