Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Food coloring (variety of colors for decoration)
- Royal icing (for decorating)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just incorporated.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies.
- Place cookies onto prepared baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Remove from the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cool, decorate using royal icing in various colors and apply wet-on-wet designs.
Notes
Ensure cookies are completely cool before icing. Use gel food coloring for vibrant shades. Allow royal icing to dry fully for best results.
