Description
A delightful and comforting dish featuring creamy layers of melted cheese and tender potatoes, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, minced
- 1 garlic clove, grated
- 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped or 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 3 tbsp flour (use gluten-free if desired)
- 1 1/2 cups milk or substitute heavy cream
- 1/2 cup shredded gruyere cheese
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 lb potatoes, sliced thin
- 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the grated garlic and thyme, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture, stirring to combine. Gradually whisk in the milk (or cream), ensuring there are no lumps. Bring to a small simmer, allowing the mixture to thicken.
- Remove from heat and stir in the first amount of shredded gruyere cheese, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper to taste.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the first layer and then repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Top the gratin with the remaining shredded gruyere cheese.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For best results, slice potatoes evenly and consider using starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds. Feel free to customize with additional herbs or cheeses.
