Description

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef (85% lean)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)


Instructions

  1. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, minced garlic, milk, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper in a large mixing bowl and mix until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval patties about ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and brown the patties for about 2-3 minutes on each side (optional).
  4. Place the browned patties in a slow cooker.
  5. Whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, and ketchup in a separate bowl, then pour over the patties. Add mushrooms if using.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 360 minutes or on high for 240 minutes.
  7. Mix cornstarch and water to create a slurry, add it to the slow cooker to thicken the gravy about 30 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve the Salisbury steaks with gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

Do not overmix the beef to keep the steaks tender. Browning is optional but adds extra flavor.
