Description

A decadent side dish featuring creamy, cheesy goodness paired with tender potatoes, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the flour and whisk to form a paste.
  4. Gradually pour in the heavy cream, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens.
  5. Add the salt, pepper, and nutmeg, stirring until combined.
  6. Add the sliced potatoes to the sauce, stirring to coat them evenly.
  7. Transfer the potato mixture to a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil, sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven uncovered for an additional 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, slice potatoes thinly and use starchy varieties like Russets. Allow the dish to rest before serving for easier portioning.
